Culloden 2001: A Scottish Odyssey


SATURDAY-THE BATTLE OF PRESTONPANS

Phase 1:
1. Jacobite army and government take field around the same time and deploy skirmishers; dragoons skirmish in advance of government forces and engage clan skirmishers. Brief artillery fire from government side, no artillery on Jacobite side.
2. Jacobites reform and march off beyond sight in trees; government troops stand easy.

Phase 2:
1. Jacobite army has marched to the south and has been able to flank government position, they appear with much vigor in new position forcing government forces to wheel back to right the line.
2. Jacobite army advances and a brief amount of musket fire and artillery prevails between sides.
3. The Jacobites send out skirmishers to cover their advance as do the government forces to cover their redeployment.
4. There is a skirmish at mid-field which checks the Jacobite advance.
5. The main Jacobite line joins their skirmishers, halt and reform by brigade while government skirmishers return to their lines.
6. There is a brief period of concentrated musket and artillery fire back and forth.
7. the Jacobite army calls "claymores" and prepares to charge, giving time for government artillery to clear guns and signal they are clear, government infantry prime and load and prepare for one volley into Jacobite attack.
8. The highland charge, government line fires one volley and disintegrates. Many are cut down in pre-arranged hand-to-hand others run but the government forces are completely routed, prisoners are rounded up and marched off.
9. March past of troops led by the Jacobite forces.

 

SUNDAY-THE BATTLE OF CULLODEN MOOR

DEPLOYMENT
1. Jacobite army takes the field and stands easy awaiting arrival of the government army.
2. Government army marches on and takes position opposite after this point.
3. Jacobite army is revived by the sight of their opponent and yells and cheers at government forces, government forces do not respond but maintain stoic silence.

OPENING
4. Jacobite artillery piece opens fire which signals general artillery dual. Jacobite piece is quickly silenced and government artillery pounds opposing line at a steady rate.

GOVERNMENT MOVEMENT
5. Government highlanders are deployed into flanking position along the wall, dragoons follow and hold position along the wall, demonstrating and causing the detachment of a highland clan to check their progress.

JACOBITE RESPONSE
6. "Claymores" is called and the highland charge begins. The right side of Jacobite line advances at a steady pace but the left wing advances at a slow and uncommitted pace.
7. The right wing of the Jacobite army engages the left wing of the government and is decimated; the few survivors are put to flight and flee the field.
8. The left wing of the Jacobite army closes but does not engage the right of the government line taunting and attempting to get them to break ranks to no avail. Seeing the main charge broken they begin a steady and orderly withdrawal from the field.

THE DESTRUCTION OF THE JACOBITE ARMY
9. Seeing the charge shattered the Dragoons and government highlanders break through wall to flank Jacobite forces and and threaten to cut them off.
10. The main body of the government army advances in order to sweep the field; Prince Charles retires from the field.
11. The Dragoons break through wall and engage the French troops and rear guard who hold post and cover the withdrawal of surviving clans, eventually they are compelled to surrender and are marched from the field.

AFTERMATH
12. Bayoneting and looting of the dead and wounded by the government forces.
13. March past of troops led by the government forces.
